You're Allowed to Change your Dreams

'The biggest adventure you can take is to live the life of your dreams'

- Oprah Winfrey

You are allowed to change your dreams, and you are allowed to change your mind. You are allowed to change, period. Changing means you’re growing. Growing means you’re learning, and learning means you’re living.

Sometimes we set out on a career path, and along the way, we get lost, taking some time for us to remember what our end destination was supposed to be.

Sometimes we set out on a career path and along the way, we decide we want to take another route, and you know what? That’s ok, too. Just because you change your path does not mean you have to kill your dreams.

Sometimes dreams shift into something new, and sometimes the dreams that we wanted to achieve lose meaning as we get older. Life happens, and the things we thought we wanted when we were 16, 18, 21, 26, and 30, sometimes they shift because the world around us shifts. Maybe we don’t want to be on that career path anymore because it doesn’t fuel our spirit, or because it doesn’t pay the bills. Maybe it’s because it doesn’t give us the time we need for our family, for our friends, or for whatever matters most to us. Maybe we change our path because it just isn’t what we want anymore, and you know what? That is also ok.

Life is constantly shifting all around us. Seasons change, flowers bloom, the wind moves, and sometimes, the things we hold onto so tightly no longer serve us best, or perhaps, more importantly, they no longer allow us to serve the world in the best way we are capable of. So we shift, we move, we change course, we find a new destination; and there is nothing wrong with that.

The dreams you had when you were younger do not have to nail you down forever. You’re allowed to pick something different, and you’re allowed to put certain adventures to rest to embark on something new. That doesn’t mean you failed, and it doesn’t mean you quit. It doesn’t mean your schooling was a waste, and it doesn’t mean you’ll never find a purpose in a different career.

It just means you’ve changed what you want, and you’re allowed to want to do something different. We all are.
